When he was about 6 or 7 years old his family appears to have moved to Skirbeck, on the outskirts of Boston. SARAH HUNN was born at Wrangle, also near Boston, but appears to have moved to Skirbeck with her family some time before her marriage. James and Sarah were married by banns in St Nicholas Church, Skirbeck, both being described as "of this parish". The witnesses were Richard and Jane Hunn, presumably the bride's father and youngest sister. All 4 were able to write their names. After their marriage James and Sarah lived in Boston where their first 6 children were born. Around 1834 they moved to Islington, London, and during the following 5 years, while their next 3 children were baptised at St Mary's, Islington, James was described as an office clerk (once, in 1837, as a labourer) living at Islington Wharf. In 1841 James was still a wharf clerk by Regents Canal (City Road Basin), and the family were living in Graham St. In 1846 they were living close by at 27 Noel St. The last 3 children do not appear to have been baptised in the Church of England. After the introduction of a national birth registration system in 1837 church baptism was of course no longer (almost) mandatory. However this may be a sign of their non-conformist views, perhaps already leaning towards the Brethren. By 1851 James had become a partner in "Waltham and Hill, Coal and Coke Merchants and Wharfingers; 19 Macclesfield St North, City Road, and 6 St Peters St, River Lane, Islington" (Post Office Directory 1851), and the family lived at the St Peter St address. At the time of the 1851 census they had a servant, Susannah Wade, aged 23, living with them, also a visitor, Deborah Bull, a milliner aged 30 who was born at Wareham, Dorset. By 1861 the family had moved to 13 Park Terrace (later simply No 313), Liverpool Rd, Islington. Only the 3 youngest children were still at home, plus a boarder (Sarah Mason, aged 22, born in Hull, Yorkshire). In 1862 James Waltham was still listed in the Directory as a Coal Merchant but without Hill. The absence of "Wharfinger" is also probably significant. In the 1830's coal for London arrived by boat but by this time the railways would have taken over. In 1871 James still called himself a coal merchant though he was now 68 years old. Only one of the youngest pair, Ellen Mary, was still living at home with her parents, plus a 4-year old grandson, Thomas B Harris, born in Dalston. They now occupied only part of 313 Liverpool Rd, probably the upstairs, the rest being occupied by a widow and her 4 grown-up children. By 1881 no Walthams were left at 313 Liverpool Rd. A James Waltham died in London Central District in Jan/March 1876 aged 73. A Sarah Waltham died in Holborn in April/June 1875 aged 75 and another in April/June 1877 aged 76. CHARLES RICHARD married Louisa ... (b c 1830) and in 1851 they were living at 16 Graham St, Islington, with a daughter Maria aged 18 months and a 19-year-old servant. Charles was then a coal merchant, probably with his father's firm. JANE ANNE was living at home in June 1851. On 8 Sep 1851 she married Henry Dale Mitchell, an accountant, son of Thomas Mitchell, surgeon. Henry was then living at 6 St Thomas St, and the couple were married at St Mary's, Islington. The witnesses were James Waltham and Mary Mitchell, probably the groom's mother. All 4 signed their names. CHARLOTTE was working as a milliner in 1851, possibly with Deborah Bull. She was not at home in 1861. HARRIETT was at home in 1851, probably helping her mother as she was 16. She was no longer there in 1861. EDWARD and EDMUND were not at home in 1841 and had almost certainly died young. CLARA was a scholar in 1851 and was not at home in 1861. She may have married in Jul/Sep 1863. EMILY SARAH and ELLEN MARY were apparently twins. Emily was not at home in 1871 but Ellen still lived with her parents.
