The only other recorded possibility is that he was born in Hurstpierpoint in 1709, which is over 20 miles from Westham and seems unlikely. In Pevensey Richard and Mary Weeks had 3 children between 1707 and 1713, and in Eastbourne John and Mary Weeks had 2 children in 1712 and 1713, but none were called William. SARAH's ancestry is unknown. William and Sarah lived at Westham, near Eastbourne, Sussex, though their eldest daughter Mary's birth was recorded at Pevensey, adjacent to Westham. Their son William's birth is not registered at all, but there was a gap in the parish record of births between 20 May and 30 Dec 1737. In July 1751 the vicar of Westham took a census of the village, and William Wicks, labourer, is recorded as living at "No 21" with a wife and one son under 16 (and no servants). He was "not a voter". At that time 293 people in all lived in the village. The William Wicks who died at Westham in 1769 was recorded as "aged". The Sarah Wicks who died there in 1784 was recorded as "aged 75". MARY remained unmarried, assuming she is the Mary Wicks (age unknown) who died at Westham in 1781. SARAH may also have remained unmarried. A Sarah Wicks was buried at Westham in 1794 "aged 56 years". This could alter-natively have been William's wife (see 40); however in neither case does the age fit, and since it is more likely to be under-estimated than over-estimated the identification with this Sarah is preferred.
