Hogne Erikson Risnes/Marta Arnesdtr Hope

Life and times of Hogne Erikson Risnes and Marta Arnesdtr Hope Risness family.

HOGNE ERIKSON RISNES was born at Risnes, and baptised the Sunday after Easter 1757. He was taught writing and arithmetic by Ludvig Daae (see 66), vicar of Lindaas, for a few months, and also for a period by an old man Oystein Rosnes.

MARTA ARNESDTR HOPE was born at Hope.

Hogne became the assistant to the next vicar of Lindaas, Johan Haugs, in 1787, and continued to hold the post under Arnold Meyer (see 19) from 1792 to 1820. He was industrious and became one of the district's most respected men. In 1807 he was made second-in-command (to Lieutenant Gerhard Daae - see 33) over the local militia, about 60 men, set up to resist a possible English invasion. The militia was not disbanded until the war ended in 1814.

Hogne and Martha both lived to a ripe old age, with 5 children, 27 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren living at the time of their death. Hogne eventually became somewhat deaf and physically weak, needing two sticks to help him walk. He fell ill on New Years Day 1835 and died in his bed 3 weeks later.

KRISTEN married (1799) Dordi Hansdtr Bergsvik (b 1763), the childless widow of Tor Amundson Bergsvik (see 131) who had died the previous year aged 75, and so became the owner of Bergsvik farm. They had 6 children of which only 3, Tore, Erik and Engel, survived infancy. (Tore's descendents still live at Bergsvik). In 1818 Kristen was a member of the Commission for the Registration of Properties. Dordi died in 1831 and in 1836 Kristen married Sigrid Rasmusdtr Skjeggedal, a 65-year-old widow with 6 grown children.

ERIK died by drowning. He had gone to fetch the boat from the little bay at Risnes, carrying his gun, presumably to go bird shooting and also to row the dairy maid across to milk the cows. His body was found standing in the water with the rifle still in his hand. Apparently he had slipped on the sloping rock as he was trying to step into the boat. He was buried on 13 July 1800.

SIGRID (or Siri) married (1806) Mons Henrikson Sondre Hope (b 1781, d 1861), and went to live at Hope, Sondre (see 146). They had 6 children, one of whom (Brita) married Arne Arneson Hope (see 18).

KARI married (1815) Lars Johannesen Elvik (b 1792) and went to live at Elvik. They had 5 children. Lars became vice-chairman of the Municipal Council from 1842 to 1845. He died in 1867.

SYGNI married Hans Engel Daae (for continuation see 33).
