Life and times of the Anders Daae/Birgitte Ludvigsdtr Munthe family
ANDERS DAAE was born in Trondheim. His father died when he was 8 years old, and he was looked after for the next 12 years by Simon Hoff, a theological lecturer and Rector of the Cathe-dral School at Trondheim. In 1700 Anders went to Copenhagen University. On 6 May 1701 he passed an examination in "philosophy". He returned to Trondheim on 25 April 1702 and worked under Simon Hoff until the autumn, when he became tutor to Lars Bronlunds' children for 2 years. As a result the children qualified for the highest class at Nidro School, Trondheim.
On 29 July 1705 he returned to Copenhagen to continue his studies. He wrote a tract on Psalm 45 v 14 for Princess Sophia Hedvig, and as a result was appointed vicar of Vik, the previous incumbent, Ludvig Christopherson Munthe, having died. He took over on 3 Aug 1708, and was ordained on 8 Oct by the Bishop of Bergen County and installed on 18 Oct by the Provost of Sogn, Samuel Bugge.
The custom in those days was for the new incumbent to marry the widow of the previous holder. Anders duly set out one day to court the 38-year-old Dorothea Blix Munthe, dressed in his best clothes. On the way he fell over and dirtied his white stockings. He took this to be an omen (perhaps conveniently) and eventually married the widow's eldest stepdaughter instead.
BIRGITTE LUDVIGSDTR MUNTHE was born at Hove in Vik, the eldest daughter of Ludvig Christopherson Munthe and his first wife Karen Leganger. Her mother died when she was 14.
In about 1719 Anders became Provost of Sogn. In 1740 he founded a school, paying all expenses himself, and in 1743 he wrote to King Christian VI for approval. The king wrote back approving the foundation. When, many years later, the school was pulled down, the endowment was used to buy linen for poor schoolchildren.
In 1760 Anders celebrated his jubilee (50 years) as a vicar, and was by then reputed to be the richest vicar in Bergen county. He died a few years later in the vicarage.
Anders' 3 surviving sons all became vicars. His 3 elder daughters were all widowed early and lived with their mother after Anders' death.
JONAS married (1751) Dorothea Margrite Finde (b 1729). They had one daughter, who married but had no children. Jonas took over as vicar of Vik when his father died. Dorothea died 11 Feb 1800.
KAREN CATHRINE married (14 Nov 1736) Friedrich Wilhelm Tuchsen (see 135).
CHRISTINE married (12 Sep 1736) Hans Gron (b Feb 1709). They had 4 sons, 3 of whom remained unmarried while the other one had 3 children. In 1744 it was planned that Hans should become a chaplain at Vik, working with his brother-in-law Jonas, but he died the following year.
In 1754 Christine's eldest son Johan, then 15 years old, designed the programme and wrote the wedding song for his Uncle Ludvig's wedding (see 66).
After her mother died Christine lived at Saebo until she died.
MARIE married (1752) Ove Christian Leyrdahl (b 8 May 1718), who had been a student at Bergen Cathedral School. They had no children. Ove went to Copenhagen in 1762 and died there.
ANNA DOROTHEA married (16 Sep 1752) Henrik Finde, born (1727) in Indvik and brother of Dorothea Margrite Finde who married Jonas. They had 3 daughters all of whom married and had children, and one son who married but remained childless. Henrik died 15 June 1770.
GERHARD attended Bergen Cathedral School. In 1761 he became vicar of Lyster. He married (27 Oct 1762) Catherine Elizabeth Knagenhjelm (b 12 Jun 1734) from Kaupanger. They had 8 children and many further descendents. Catherine died 23 Jan 1808.
